| | The Future of The Aztec Update Last semester, when Shanee Warden and I were recording her voiceovers for our final newscast of the semester, I didn't tell her why but I asked her to put a little emphasis on the word "hope" when she said "we hope to see you back here next semester" at the end of the newscast. That's because even then I knew that The Aztec Update might not return in the fall.
The Aztec Update and the 15+ San Diego State students behind it broke new ground last semester when we launched the university's first student-produced podcast covering news and events at SDSU. We produced ten newscasts and seven special reports totaling almost five full hours, our web site was visited by thousands of people, and we were proud, damn proud to break news before anybody else did on more than one occasion.
However, this is a story we take no pride in reporting. This semester, The Aztec Update will not continue because we no longer have the news team to support it. Several of The Aztec Update's on-air and off-air staff graduated, and others have simply moved on to bigger and better things. We tried to replace those we had lost, but ultimately couldn't put together the news team we need, and without them, there simply is no show.
If life has taught me anything though, it's that time can make a world of difference. The cold of winter naturally gives way to the warmth of spring. Likewise, what has been pushed aside now may someday revive itself and become even better than ever. And I personally hope it does, whether I'm here to see it or not. But even if it doesn't, I can walk away truly satisfied, knowing that what we did as a team was truly something special.
